Vir is one part of the Dalmatian archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, located on the northwest part of Dalmatia nearby Zadar city. The island lays on the west from Island Pag separated by a thin channel called Pag channel. One can reach Vir town through passing a bridge which is free to use. Therefore one do not need to take car ferry which is very crowded in the high season in Croatia.
Vir Island has its 31 km long seashore, divided by sandy and rocky beaches and high rocks on the north. With its sandy beaches, Vir is unique in its kind as Croatia has few of them. One of the largest kite-spot and beach lays 10 mins from the apartment house by car.
One of the sandy beaches may be found on a small island nearby Vir. The island can be reached by rubber boat or motorboat. We have taken the photo below on the island.
As one can see, the beach is a long sandy one and the sea is so low so that little kids can enjoy that freely. On the northwest part of Vir three hills are found with 3 peaks. One can enjoy the beauty of the never ending sea and the surrounding islands while watching the sun hiding behind the horizon... Wonderful! The northern part has high rocks resulting from the erosion made by the strong north winds blowing from Velebit mountains.
You may take a trip to the peaks of Vir Island, from where you will enjoy the awesome panorama. You can see the Velebit mountain, the surrounding islands and the sea all round. The best time for this walk is late afternoon, if you wish to be amazed by the sunset. Do not forget to bring your camera to capture the beautiful view.
Vir offers various kinds of shores. For those who wish to explore the island, we advise to visit the northern side of Vir Island. One may find many secret beaches on this side. The photo on the left was taken at one of these. They are difficult to approach, therefore only few people want to go there. It is a good news for those who seek for a calm atmosphere far away from the crowded beaches. Kids will enjoy playing on the sandy beaches, while parents may try snorkelling or just sunbathing. The family may stay alone for the whole day there. While passing the bridge, one may find a small island on the right. This is also a good place to visit asit has a sandy beach too. There is no connection to the mainland, however, we provide rubber boat for those who keen on visiting it.
Vir, which is the largest village on the island, lays in the southern bay. The village is rich in sandy beaches. Those who suffer from rheumatic diseases may take a mudbath in Privlaka. The mu
The time can be passed here in pleasure as many restaurants, clubs, bars, cafés discos and open markets are found here and the surrounding. In case of emergency, first aid and small medical treatment center is located in place. Fish market available for those who like to eat really fresh sea fish.
It is important to note that there is no petrol station on the island. Nearest ones may be found in Nin town (10 km, on the way to Zadar nearby the main road) or right before the right turn at the highway exit.
Credit cards are rarely accepted by shopkeepers on the island, therefore it is advised to withdraw money in Zadar. For big shopping (at arrival) we advise to visit the large shopping malls in Zadar. All of them accept credit cards. Money exchange is possible at the post office in Vir centre.
